How We Got Started
The Fulton County Quilt Club began through the efforts of Sybil Coble, Home Extension Economist, with the Fulton County Extension Office.
Whrelda Pittman, a native Fulton Countian who likes history and quilts, suggested to Sybil that the Extension Homemakers celebrate the 300th anniversary of William Penn's land grant by sponsoring a quilted crafts contest. The 1981 show was titled the Tricentennial Quilted Crafts Contest.
The Fulton County Quilt Club has hosted an annual quilt show during the Fall Folk Festival ever since. Whrelda Pittman designed our quilt club logo.
The club meets the third Saturday of each month, except during August, October and December, and the meetings are normally held in the Fulton County Library, McConnellsburg. During the renovating of the library, the club is meeting at the United Methodist Church on the Court House square. We collect $10 in annual dues at our January meeting.
We are an educational organization and our goal is to promote quilting. We hold classes, donate quilting books and videos to the library, and provide quilting supplies to the area schools. Mini workshops are provided to the members and the public. Members are encouraged to bring their projects to the meetings and help is offered when needed.
During the McConnellsburg Fall Folk Festival, we will display and sell raffle tickets for the 2010 raffle quilt. We enter an educational exhibit in August at the Fulton County Fair and demonstrate and teach hand quilting on our raffle quilt. Our quilt show in October during the Fulton Fall Folk Festival is held at the Fulton Theater. The beautiful, historic Fulton Theater is graciously provided to us by the F&M Bank. The raffle quilt is designed and constructed by a committee and quilted by all club members. The drawing for the raffle quilt is 4:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, the last day of the show.
We enjoy preserving an art form from the past and look forward to meeting and working with people interested in quilting.
